About 130 fun-loving people turned out on Saturday, Dec. 1, for another great day of orienteering at Mississippi Bar in Fair Oaks .  This was our final event of the short 2007 orienteering year for GCO.

Dwight Freund set five unique courses (White, Yellow, Orange , Brown, and Red) that proved to be challenging.  The day started out quite chilly, but the sun was out and it warmed up quickly.

The Porter Family blitzed the White course, where we had quite a large number of beginners.  Kirk Rexin and Jeremy Fassler edged out Harold DeMoss for the first position on Yellow, and then they went on to speed through the Orange course.  Will they be upping their game to Brown next time?  First on Orange was Jeff Van Horne, quite a feat considering the number of participants who had difficulty on that course!

There was a competitive field on Brown; Ron Gross showed that he hasn’t lost his touch on the map and came through with the fastest time.  Dwight was concerned the Red course would be too technically difficult and expected no one would find all the controls, causing us to discourage many from giving the Red a try this time, and we promised not to DNF anyone on that course.  But Penny DeMoss really strutted her stuff on Red and finished ahead of the others.  Three of the five Red participants did find all the controls.

Many thanks to all those who helped at Mississippi Bar this time.  We had lots of helpers, many who blessedly came through during the last week.  Special thanks to Dwight Freund, who spent lots of time in advance, designing and setting courses, hanging controls and placing water on the courses.  Jennifer Kerr got us the park permits and insurance, and Bob Cooley printed the maps.  While Dwight put the final touches on the courses early on the morning of the meet, Jennifer Kerr hung controls, and Kathy Tegtmeier, Mike Christensen, Dave Takacs, and Stew Hintz did all the setup.  Stew Hintz and Earl King worked Registration; Jennifer Kerr and Ron Gross gave Beginner Clinics to numerous newcomers; Kathy Tegtmeier, Mike Christensen, Dwight Freund, and Stew Hintz smoothly ran the Starts; Dave Takacs managed Finishes and Results with help from Ellie Lightfoot and Jessica Lightfoot; Stew Hintz, Dwight Freund, Ron Gross, and Jennifer Kerr went back out to pick up controls; and Rosemary Johnson joined all of us on the cleanup crew.  Thanks to all, and my apologies if I have forgotten anyone!

GCO will soon be compiling the schedule for 2008.  Please volunteer to assist at one or more of our 2008 meets.  It’s fun, you’ll learn a lot more about orienteering, and it’s what enables us to provide more meets for all.
