Rossmoor BarOct. 21, 2007Boy was I worried! Don't
know why.
Because YOU all helped so much.
The regulars from GCO. Jennifer (wonderful courses - lots of
compliments), Dwight, Marsha, Pete, Jeff, and yes, (former club
president) Stew Hintz, whom I learned so much from watching, while working
“just Finishes” over the years. You are the ones who gave me
confidence to take on the job. The tips, energy and talent
helped to make my first Meet Director's job a breeze. Thank You.
The parents of all the kids. Car pools, volunteering for whatever
I threw at them, Scout parent Jay for perforating the freshly copied
Score Cards (guess what? 24-hour Kinkos aren't necessarily 24 hours -
call before you leap). Tom Duffy and Walter Neal for helping set up the
table areas and sign-age, the wind sure made that a challenge, Good Job
guys.
And …
At Registration, Rio Linda JROTC parent Carolann
Higginson, who did an efficient job, helped by
Pete Olsen,
Dwight Freund and Larry Lineback. AMAZING! I kept expecting to hear
screams of "Help,, not a peep. I think I saw smoke rising from
those pens though. Thank You.
At Starts for most of the day, Kathy Tagtmeier and Mike
Christensen. Well done!
Finishes handled most admirably by my replacement, Jeff Thompson.
Good job!
The Scoutmasters. You pass on a wonderful tradition. We're ALL
lucky to have you. Thank You.
Sac State professor Julie Kuehl Kitchen, who has her
Nontraditional Games students do a variety of events including
Orienteering, “rounding out” their experience for their future
leadership positions, and being at the event to encourage them. Thanks
for including us in their learning.
Once again Larry Lineback from Rio Linda High, JROTC. How can you
keep that many teenagers under control for so long? BRAVO! They're a
credit to your leadership, their parents’ guidance, and their pride
and determination. And they are FAST!
The participants, all 214 of you! You came to run and we made you
wait in line. Thanks for the patience. Thanks for coming. And
just a few more maps, we only missed it by about six.
A couple of afterthoughts: Cell
phones are wonderful, but THEY have to have your number. THIS APPLIES TO
ME! I forgot to hand out my number to the workers, so we ended up
sending runners to relay messages. We
had a participant who went home with his group, instead of with his
parent, who had returned to pick him up after the group had gone home.
Complicated by lack of cell number, no Home Base for messages from
the group, fears about injuries, "we're hopelessly lost"
(didn't happen), lucky this didn't have a serious outcome.
First Aid - a couple of band aids in your pocket is a good idea.
Anything to hold you over until we can get help to you.
Event workers perhaps need an identifier. A brightly colored hat,
something to make you stand out. There were some big crowds, if you're
easy to spot, quicker to get help, less frustration for the
participants.
Early Starts, late comers, MAYBE allow for them. But they MUST
call, AND GET APPROVAL, so the Organizers can adjust their procedures.
(the Finish guy can't run his course, if he's waiting for Starts to
relieve him), scheduling workers around their ability. We want everyone
to be able to participate but - There is a SCHEDULE.
Signs. I have a couple of ideas, I'm going to try to build some
directionals that aren't so susceptible to the wind.
With my greatest appreciation, Dave
