Sacramento Bar

      It was overcast and pleasantly cool for most of the day and 93 people came to rocky Sacramento Bar for Gold Country Orienteers’ first meet of 2006.

     Dwight Freund set four challenging courses that took everyone into or through the intricate rock piles left behind by gold dredging.

     The white course was particularly challenging, with a route between controls seven and eight that took very careful reading of the map and its contours. The fastest time was by Nicholas Spiegel and Israel Guadarrama of Rio Linda JROTC, but it was their second course of the day. The winners were Lauren Wemmer and Kiki and Alison Weber of GCO in 61:07. Next were Janis and Kaitlyn Williams of a Venture Crew in 65:25 and Kristopher Hollinger, Karen Winnett and Sara, Christopher and Nicole Gray of the NorCal Young Marines in 66:05.

     Tops on yellow were Janelle and Gary Wallis of CSUS in 49:12, followed by Ton Phan and Samuel Soohoo of CSUS in 51:34 and Gary Cook in 60:17. The top two times on orange were BAOCers Mattias Eriksson and Steve Gregg doing second courses. The winners were Jerry and Joel Olson and Bob LaPanja of Team Lucky in 43:33. Next, after BAOC second-courser Brad Wetmore, were Erin Magers and Chris Ryalls of GCO in 62:10 and Jeff Thompson of GCO in 65:38.

     Eriksson blasted through the brown course in 31:56, followed by Daniel Griff in 32:29 and Gregg in 49:11. Anna Voegele of BAOC was close behind at 53:38 as the top woman.

     Of course, profuse thanks are due to our volunteers, since any meet would be unbearable chaos without them. I must thank Dwight for his courses; Stew Hintz for helping put out controls, printing maps, running starts, control pickup and lots of other stuff; Art Livingston and Larry Lineback for registration; Jeff Thompson for starts and control pickup; and Dave Takacs for his always terrific effort on finishes.

We also were blessed with an unusual helper. Matthew Robbins of OCIN flew in from Cincinnati on his way to Reno , too late for the meet, but drove out to help with control pickup and lessons on spotting West Coast poison oak. Amazing!
