Sacramento Bar

More than 200 adventurous people turned out on Sunday April 6th for a great day of orienteering at Sacramento Bar in Fair Oaks .  This was GCO’s first event of 2008, and we are hoping to see many of you return during the year.

Jennifer Kerr set 5 unique and fun courses (White, Yellow, Orange , Brown, and Red) on a recently updated map (thanks to Jeff Thompson for the updates).  We were lucky to have perfect orienteering weather – a combination of sun and some cloud cover, with the temperature in the upper 60’s.

Jennifer Kerr also did a super job with publicity, and we were rewarded with lots of newcomers.

Eleven-year-old David Harrison blasted his way through the White course with the fastest time, and the Jolly and Trimble families were not very far behind in second and third place.  The White course was well attended, as we had quite a large number of beginners, many of whom decided to try a second course.  Bill Phillips took the first position on Yellow, and then went on to perform well on the Orange course.  First on Orange was Jeff Thompson.  13-Year-old Daniel Kopisch also proved outstanding on Orange , which turned out to be the toughest course of the day.

Bob Cooley left the Brown competitors on the dust!  Ben Legg must have had some good practice at his BAOC campout workshop earlier in the weekend, because he led the field on the Red course.

Many thanks to all those who helped at Sacramento Bar this time.  Special thanks to Jennifer Kerr, who spent lots of time in advance, designing and setting courses, hanging controls and placing water on the courses.  On meet day she also assisted with setup and registration, and picked up controls!  Thanks to Bob Cooley for printing the maps.  Early on the morning of the meet, Jennifer Kerr hung the last of the controls and then helped with setup, along with Dave Takacs, Jay Hann, and Stew Hintz.  Judy Koehler and Ellie Lightfoot gave Beginner Clinics to numerous newcomers; Stew Hintz and Nancy Flagg smoothly ran the Starts; Dave Takacs managed Finishes and Results with his team of Ellie Lightfoot and Jessica Lightfoot; Joan Roos filled in to answer newcomers’ many questions; Stew Hintz, Ron Gross, and Jennifer Kerr went back out to pick up controls; and everyone assisted on the cleanup crew.  Thanks to all, and my apologies if I have forgotten anyone!

Please volunteer to assist at one or more of our 2008 meets.  It’s fun, you’ll learn a lot more about orienteering, and it’s what enables us to provide more meets for all.
